Volunteer: Read to Succeed for 2025-26 School Year: Sponsored by Women UnitedWomen United's Read to Succeed initiative is a reading mentorship program for local students in local elementary schools. The initiative helps children meet their reading goals and supports achieving grade level reading. When? Both male and female volunteers meet weekly with an assigned student for 30 minutes during school hours for approximately 26 weeks. (Alternatively, individuals may partner with another mentor and commit to 13 weeks.) Training is provided to give reading coaches the necessary skills to assist children in improving literacy skills. The program runs during the school year from Fall (usually by mid-Oct) through May.As a volunteer you will be matched with a school and schedule that fits your availability, within the county that you'd like to serve. Your schedule will be a consistent day and time each week. The Read to Succeed volunteer coordinator will contact you to set this up when you respond to this opportunity.
Why?Coaching a child who is learning to read is a simple act that has lifelong impact. The ability to read impacts graduation rates, career access, and crime rates. By 3rd grade, children are advancing from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn' so strong reading fundamentals are crucial for educational success. Note: Open to 18+, or high school students with approval. All volunteers must pass the county Board of Education's background check.
