We need safety-conscious, patient drivers to provide shuttle service to performers, staff and presenters. The Festival will provide a fleet of vans and golf carts, with a radio dispatcher to keep things flowing smoothly.

All drivers will participate in mandatory training and must be at least 21 years of age. To ensure the safety of all, Transportation volunteers are required to go through a background check of their motor vehicle record.

Volunteers willing to work multiple shifts are preferred.

You will not be able to view available shifts until a waiver has been signed. All Volunteers are REQUIRED to sign a waiver prior to participating in the Maryland Folk Festival. To sign a waiver, please scroll down to the "Sign Waiver" button in the bottom right corner of this page. Once you've completed the waiver, you will be able to view available shifts and sign up.

Volunteer: 2025 Marketplace

Assisting in the Festival Marketplace is an opportunity to support artisans from around Maryland and the surrounding region. Volunteers play an important role helping vendors load in their wares and get settled, as well as pack up after a great weekend. During the festival, volunteers help by standing in for vendors who may need a moment away from their point of sale.

This is a great opportunity to get to know the Marketplace craftspeople a little - and see their beautiful wares earlier than anyone else!

Volunteer: 2025 Bike Valet

Think of a bike valet as a coat check for bikes!  The idea is simple - festival attendees riding their bikes to the MDFF bring their bike to the valet; they are given a number/ticket; the bike is safely stored for the duration of the event, and when the attendee is ready to ride home the number/ticket is presented to valet and their bike is returned.  The bike valet reduces the number of attendees driving to the MDFF, provides a safe, covered location for attendees to leave their bikes during the event, and removes the need for festival goers to bring a bike lock.  Volunteers are needed to manage the drop-off and pick-up of bikes during the MDFF.  Two volunteers will be at the bike valet at all times.

Volunteer: AmeriCorps Members

1 Year to Empowerment is seeking one or two Minimum-Time AmeriCorps Members for the 2025-2026 service year.

Founded in 2015, 1 Year to Empowerment is a year-long program designed to promote self-esteem, self-respect, and self-reliance through a year-long and free experience full of empowering and meaningful experiences. Our activities include personal development, financial literacy, and a long list of very fun and engaging activities from aerial yoga, to boxing and self-defense, to doing an escape room.

What makes this program unique is the large emphasis placed upon empowerees to better themselves and their peers. It is truly a supportive group and a safe place to be oneself and to grow. While this is not a therapeutic program, it is designed to promote mental and physical wellness and balance. A very large reason we have been so successful in this area is the exceptional staff and mentors we bring to activities. They are role models and set an accepting and safe space for our Empowerees to be themselves and to be kind to one another. Our mentors and staff also value their own growth and the satisfaction they get from interacting with our empowerees.

This program includes teenage girls from many schools and counties. This is intentional to ensure that our empowerees are able to learn from one another and engage with other teens who come from different backgrounds.

If you have a vehicle and some flexible hours, you could help us pick up food at local farms and farmers markets and get that good food to agencies in your area!  Pick ups are often easiest for larger deliveries, but vans, SUVs and cars can help distribute smaller amounts to smaller agencies.  Opportunities arise on short notice, as farmers find they have good, edible food that isn't marketable, and they need to clear it out.   Volunteers drive to farms, farmers load the food, and agencies help unload.

Volunteer: Read to Succeed for 2025-26 School Year: Sponsored by Women United

Women United's Read to Succeed initiative is a reading mentorship program for local students in local elementary schools.  The initiative helps children meet their reading goals and supports achieving grade level reading. When? Both male and female volunteers meet weekly with an assigned student for 30 minutes during school hours for approximately 26 weeks. (Alternatively, individuals may partner with another mentor and commit to 13 weeks.) Training is provided to give reading coaches the necessary skills to assist children in improving literacy skills. The program runs during the school year from Fall (usually by mid-Oct) through May.As a volunteer you will be matched with a school and schedule that fits your availability, within the county that you'd like to serve. Your schedule will be a consistent day and time each week. The Read to Succeed volunteer coordinator will contact you to set this up when you respond to this opportunity.
Why?Coaching a child who is learning to read is a simple act that has lifelong impact. The ability to read impacts graduation rates, career access, and crime rates. By 3rd grade, children are advancing from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn' so strong reading fundamentals are crucial for educational success.

Click respond today to help local children meet their reading potential!  Questions? Email r2s@uwles.org.

Note:  Open to 18+, or high school students with approval.  All volunteers must pass the county Board of Education's background check.
