Who We Are
The Wicomico Environmental Trust (WET) works for policies and programs that preserve and protect nature in our county and the Chesapeake Bay region. We work with other nonprofits, government, businesses, and individuals to keep our water, forests, and farmland beautiful and healthy for future generations to enjoy.
Mission & Vision
WET’s mission is to champion a healthy environment for all.
WET envisions our County as a community that uses land wisely and protects water resources, native wildlife, and vegetation, in a way that enhances the quality of life on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore.
History
WET was founded in 1989 by a small group of citizens concerned about the lack of direction in Wicomico County’s environmental policies. In its first five years, the organization focused primarily on public education about environmental issues. When the individual leading the effort relocated, WET became dormant between 1994 and 1999.
In 1999, a core group of original members reactivated the organization and brought in new members. They renewed WET’s tax-exempt status, revised its bylaws, educated themselves on current environmental issues and solutions, and began sponsoring educational programs. They also reestablished communication with county officials and environmental organizations and started collaborating with the county’s planning and zoning officials and its commission responsible for approving new developments.
Since 2005, the board has held strategic planning retreats to assess its efforts and set future goals. In December 2010, WET hired its first executive director and opened an office, marking a significant milestone in its development.
Since reactivation, WET’s membership has grown to approximately 900 core members. Its quarterly newsletter is distributed to members, public officials, and interested individuals, reaching thousands through schools, stores, libraries, and online platforms. WET has also established strong outreach relationships with local print and broadcast media, which frequently seek its input on environmental issues of public importance.
What We Do
Wicomico Environmental Trust (WET) actively works to fulfill its mission and vision through a variety of impactful programs and initiatives, including:

- Advocacy for the Local Environment: Engaging with local officials and stakeholders to advocate for policies and practices that protect natural resources and address environmental challenges.
- Environmental Education & Outreach: Hosting educational programs and events to raise awareness about critical environmental issues and solutions. Creation of educational materials such as the recent Wicomico River Watershed Atlas.

- Tree Plantings: Restoring ecosystems by planting trees to improve air and water quality, increase biodiversity, and combat climate change.
