Who We Are

The 1 Year to Empowerment Program is a year-long program designed to enable teenage girls on the Eastern Shore to make healthy choices, trusting friendships, and attainable goals.  The program, developed by psychologists at The Child & Family Center in Salisbury and Easton, Maryland, promotes empowerment though 12 activities (one per month) that target mental and physical wellness and teach valuable skills to live healthy, balanced lives, all while giving back to the community.  Ultimately, through ACCEPTANCE, COMMITMENT, PERSEVERANCE AND EMPOWERMENT, the girls involved in the program will engage in activities designed to promote self-esteem, self-respect, and self-reliance over the course of one year.

What We Do

A year-long empowerment program for girls in high school and middle school. Throughout the year, our empowerees get together once per month to engage in an empowering activity as a group. Examples of activities include yoga, zumba, healthy cooking, mindfulness, assertiveness skills, self-defense, beyond the limits, kayaking and fishing. We also engage in numerous community service activities such as building a wheelchair ramp with Chesapeake Housing Mission, putting on a Prom Dress Drive for local teens, 5Ks to support local non-profits, and the Women Supporting Women Walk.

Our girls also have a boutique in downtown Salisbury where they meet after school for workshops on important life skills such as financial literacy and goal setting. They can get tutoring for school and just hang out with one another. It is here where the girls also create inspirational artwork that we sell at different events to raise money for the program!
